By deciding to run for a position for School Director on your local school board, you have taken the first step in educational leadership. School boards are the backbone of our public c schools, and the governance and strategic vision they set for their districts are crucial to success. WSSDA is here to help you take those next steps.
Who is WSSDA?
WSSDA is the Washington State School Directors’ Association, and it exists solely to support the 1,477 school directors throughout the state by providing professional development, legislative advocacy and policy services. WSSDA is here to make you a better board member.
What is my first step?
Now that you’ve filed, your next step is to learn as much as you can about how to provide effective governance as a school director. WSSDA can help! We offer a series of free workshops around the state to help you learn more about the vital role of a school board member. Sample topics include:
- An explanation of the roles and responsibilities of a school director
- The legal and ethical aspects of board work
- An introduction to school director standards
- Opportunities to explore real examples of school board work and how to respond in similar situations
Current board members are also invited to attend these workshops to share their wisdom and experience with candidates. If you are a board member, please register for the workshop so we can acknowledge you and ensure we have adequate space.
Board Boot Camp:
If elected, we encourage you to attend Board Boot Camp, a full-day exploration of the many details surrounding school board work. You will learn from expert panels, connect with other board members from around the state and gain the confidence to begin your journey into school board leadership. This workshop is provided as an Early Bird session on Thursday, November 18, to kick off WSSDA’s Annual Conference in Bellevue November 19-22.
