INDEX TO OTHER HOT TOPICS
The Washington State School Directors’ Association has
published a "Hot Topics" issue brief on the No Child Left Behind
Act (NCLB), the new federal law that makes sweeping changes in U.S.
education policy. The law greatly increases the federal government’s
involvement in setting and enforcing education standards, with
particular emphasis on making states, districts and schools more
accountable for raising student achievement.
WSSDA’s issue brief outlines the major aspects of the
NCLB and how it is being implemented here in the state of Washington –
with particular emphasis on the decisions and issues confronting school
boards around the state. The brief includes a discussion of
accountability and assessment, teacher quality, reading and literacy,
school choice and innovation, flexibility, and funding. It also provides
a simplified timeline for implementation and a list of NCLB resources
and Web links.
