Reauthorization of 2004
INDEX TO OTHER HOT TOPICS
The Washington State School Directors’
Association has published a "Hot Topics" issue brief on the Individuals
with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEA) which
reauthorizes the federal law through 2011. The emphasis of the new law
shifts from compliance to academic outcomes and accountability. It
restores powers to schools while retaining the educational rights of
students with disabilities.
WSSDA’s issue brief outlines the major
aspects of the IDEA reauthorization that pertain to school
district policies and what is on the horizon as the federal Department
of Education, the state, WSSDA and local school districts revise and
implement the regulations.
