Class of 2008 faces new graduation requirements
INDEX TO OTHER HOT TOPICS
High school students
in Washington state will soon be required to meet a series of
new, rigorous graduation requirements before they can don the cap and
gown.
These requirements, which stem from the
state's landmark education reform law of 1993, are designed to ensure
all students, not just those traditionally bound for college, have the
skills needed to succeed in work or post-secondary education.
The class of 2008 will be the first
required to meet the new graduation requirements, which include earning
the Certificate of Academic Achievement (formerly the Certificate of
Mastery) by passing the 10th-grade Washington
Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) in reading, writing and math by
the end of high school. More than 80,000 students will be affected.
This issue of WSSDA Hot Topics is
designed to assist school boards and districts understand and prepare
for these new graduation requirements, with emphasis on making sure
students, their families and community members are aware of what will be
required to earn a high school diploma.
