Trust Lands and School Construction
INDEX TO OTHER HOT TOPICS
In the coming year, the state Board of
Natural Resources will set a "sustainable" harvest level for state trust
lands in Western Washington — a decision that will affect the amount of
money available for public school construction and remodeling for the
next ten years.
Recognizing the impact of the upcoming
decision, the Washington State School Directors’ Association has
published a "Hot Topics" issue brief on Trust Lands and School
Construction. The goal is to familiarize school directors and others in
the education community with the issue so that they may provide input to
the board during a 45-day public comment period scheduled for later this
year.
The issue brief provides background on
the BNR's process for establishing a sustainable harvest calculation and
a summary of the draft timber harvesting models now under consideration.
It also includes an overview of trust lands in Washington, which were
established by Congress at statehood in 1889.
