WSSDA Director of Leadership Development Services

The Washington State School Directors' Association (WSSDA) is a small state agency located in Olympia that provides leadership, advocacy and services to support public school directors' efforts to improve student learning. Serving 1,482 locally elected school board members, WSSDA has an outstanding record of service. The Association seeks a Director of Leadership Development Services to develop and deliver training programs and services for school board members in the state of Washington.

Position Overview

The Director of Leadership Development Services reports to the Executive Director. The position has primary responsibility for developing and delivering training programs to school board members in Washington through conferences, meetings, workshops, retreats, online courses and other specialized programs. The position also is responsible for developing external partnerships, obtaining and administering grants, recruiting and managing consultants who provide school board training services on a contractual basis, and supervising WSSDA's superintendent search and paperless board meeting services.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Develop and deliver Association Board Training and Services

  • Design and maintain curricula for training programs and services targeted to school board members and (where applicable) school district superintendents and others.
  • Develop and deliver school board training programs through a variety of mechanisms, including conferences, workshops, membership meetings, retreats, written and online courses, and other methods.
  • Present training programs on behalf of the association.
  • Recruit, manage and assign private consultants engaged by WSSDA to provide board and district training services.
  • Oversee the planning and implementation of WSSDA's annual conference.
  • Design and conduct the Leadership WSSDA training program.
  • Collaborate with WSSDA's marketing department to promote membership participation in association training programs and services.
  • Develop and manage WSSDA's recognition programs for local school boards, including School Boards of the Year and Diversity Awards.
  • Consult with local boards and administrators to provide assistance in resolving board concerns.

Develop External Partnerships

  • Collaborate with other state and national associations, institutions and enterprises to increase WSSDA's reputation as a premier provider of board training services.
  • Manage and promote WSSDA's superintendent search services utilizing a private consultant.
  • Manage and promote WSSDA's BoardDocs© "paperless" meeting service for school boards utilizing a private consultant.
  • Partner with technology companies and organizations to integrate technology into the development of training programs and curriculum.
  • Build and strengthen partnerships and relations with other associations, agencies and businesses.

Manage the Development of Grants

  • Apply for and manage grants in support of WSSDA's leadership development services.

Other

  • Represent the association at local, regional, state and national meetings.
  • Assure departmental products and services are consistent with the goals and objectives of the association's strategic plan.
  • Develop and manage a departmental program budget.
  • Supervise four employees.
  • Serve as a resource for WSSDA staff development and training.

Essential Functions

  • Design, develop and implement professional training programs, services and products to meet school board member needs.
  • Stay abreast of local and national education issues, technological advances and other resource developments to ensure WSSDA's training services are on the leading edge.
  • Collaborate with national, state and local associations and agencies in the development of innovative programs, products and services.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing, through computers, telephones and as a presenter.
  • Provide advice and consultation on best practices in education board leadership.
  • Be available for evening and weekend work and travel by air and automobile. Maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Regular work attendance, and availability as work load and assignments require.
  • Willingness to participate in staff and professional development opportunities to improve knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Supervise staff involved with WSSDA's leadership development services, including the association's annual conference, and other personnel as assigned.
  • Work well under pressure meeting multiple and sometimes competing deadlines, and at all times demonstrate cooperative behavior with colleagues and supervisors.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of six years professional experience as a trainer and program manager (master's degree preferred).
  • Knowledge and experience in planning, development, management and continuous improvement.
  • Experience delivering training and developing course curriculum for adults.
  • Excellent organizational, time management and multi-tasking skills and abilities.
  • Experience having worked with boards, associations and K-12 education desired.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Professional with special emphasis on using Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent speaking, writing and listening skills.

Compensation

Salary will be based on candidate qualifications. State employment benefits include retirement, health insurance and leave programs.
