Please read all instructions for the two sections carefully to assure that your submission has been completed correctly and will be included in the judging. We recommend you develop your essay in MS Word, as there is no online option to save work in progress, and then paste the completed essay into this online form to submit it.

Awards will be presented in three categories.  Please check the appropriate category:

Districts enrolling 2,000 or fewer students
Districts enrolling 2,001 to 10,000 students
Districts enrolling 10,001 or more students

SECTION 2

Provide an essay of up to 2,000 words describing "What our school board has done to improve student achievement." The essay should address how your board practices exemplary leadership and applies it to district governance and management.

For each of the areas listed below, please include specific examples of the board's work to establish or improve the district based on the five attributes of vision, structure, accountability, advocacy and contribution to improving student achievement.

  1. Exemplary willingness to become a learning organization to provide stronger leadership for improving student achievement;
  2. Collaborative work that shows the board and superintendent functioning as a team;
  3. Clearly described lessons learned that will be of interest to or benefit for other boards;
  4. Demonstrated commitment to build on what was learned through a thoughtful implementation plan.

NOTE: Please do not include district or board member names in the body of your essay, nor references to a particular city, county or identifiable landmark. (Judges will evaluate entries without knowing the name of the board/district.) Violation of this restriction will result in a deduction of points in the scoring of the essay.
