| Legislative
Pre-Assembly to focus on K-12 funding outlook, finance reform
Posted September 5, 2008
Why has Washington’s K-12 system entered a "perfect storm" of funding crises? And what are the long-term solutions to the state’s basic education finance challenges?
These questions will be addressed during a full afternoon of presentations that will precede the WSSDA Legislative Assembly, which takes place in Wenatchee later this month. The annual Pre-Assembly will feature a presentation from OSPI Assistant Superintendent Jennifer Priddy on why school district finance problems are more severe than in recent years and the outlook for the near future. Participants will also get a chance to learn about the K-12 finance reform proposal developed by the Full Funding Coalition (WSSDA, WASA, WEA, AWSP and PSE).
The Pre-Assembly will start at 1:00 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26 with an update from State Superintendent of Public Instruction Terry Bergeson. The program will also include briefings on pupil transportation, school construction, and the proposed Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act.
The Legislative Assembly will be held the following day, with more than 60
proposed legislative positions up for consideration. Be sure your district is
represented in these deliberations, which will form the basis for the
association’s positions on key education issues in the 2009 legislative session.
